Chile, Kalifornien, Mexiko, Portugal, Spanien – das sind einige der Orte, an denen Michael Bry fotografiert und gelebt hat. In diesen Ländern wurde er schon früh als ein Fotograf geschätzt, der Kunst und Dokumentation vereint. Mit knapp 80 Jahren hat Bry 2005 in Regensburg ein neues Zuhause gefunden. Nun feiert der Künstler im Oktober seinen 100. Geburtstag.
Fotograf Michael Bry hat Menschen in ihrem Alltagsleben, ausdrucksstarke Gesichter sowie Landschaften und Architektur in den Fokus gerückt. 2017 ehrte die Stadt Regensburg sein Lebenswerk mit dem Kulturpreis. Nun feiert der Künstler am Dienstag, den 01. Oktober, seinen 100. Geburtstag.
Die Geschichte der Fotografie miterleben
„Vor 80 Jahren fing ich zu fotografieren an, erst mit einer hölzernen Balgenkamera und später mit einer Plaubel-Makina 6x9. Jetzt ist mein Werkzeug eine digitale Lumix,“ berichtete Michael Bry anlässlich seines 95. Geburtstages vor fünf Jahren. Geboren 1924 in Breslau, heute Wrocław in Polen, hat er die Geschichte der Fotografie miterlebt und die sich entwickelnden technischen Möglichkeiten genutzt.
Für Brys Leben haben die historischen Ereignisse des 20. Jahrhunderts die Weichen gestellt. 1938 floh der 14-Jährige mit seiner Familie vor den Nationalsozialisten aus Breslau zunächst in die Tschechoslowakei und weiter nach Chile. In Santiago de Chile besuchte er die Academia Chilena de Bellas Artes, wo er Malerei studierte. Damals fing er an, seine Leidenschaft – das Fotografieren – zu seinem Beruf zu machen. Zunächst als Lehrling bei einem Porträtfotografen, dann im eigenen Porträtstudio.
Die Endstation seiner Umzüge ist Regensburg
Brys Weg führte weiter in die USA. 1954 übersiedelte er nach Kalifornien und verbrachte die nächsten 30 Jahre in Sausalito, dem Künstlervorort von San Francisco. Hier sind neben freien Fotografien auch umfangreiche Bildbände entstanden. Es folgte eine Phase, in der Bry mal kürzer, mal länger in verschiedenen Ländern lebte. Doch trotz dieser Internationalität bleibt seine Ästhetik mitteleuropäisch, wie er selbst sagt. In Portugal schließlich entdeckte ihn Pavel Liška, der damalige Kurator im Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie. Er war es, der Michael Bry nach Regensburg einlud. 2005 widmete das Regensburger Museum dem Künstler die erste Retrospektive im deutschsprachigen Raum. Mit der Ausstellung feierte das KOG die großzügige Übergabe des Nachlasses des Künstlers an das Museum. Heute befindet sich hier die größte Sammlung an Fotografien von Bry.
Mit 100 Jahren: Neue (Gruppen-)Ausstellung 2025 geplant
Bis ins hohe Alter traf man Michael Bry auf den Regensburger Straßen und bei Veranstaltungen. Durch den Sucher seiner Kamera beobachtete er das Geschehen – Musiker beim Mittagskonzert in der Niedermünsterkirche, Passanten auf dem Haidplatz. Aber auch die Architektur, insbesondere die wohlgeformte Steinmasse des Doms, faszinierte ihn. Seine Arbeiten sind immer wieder in Ausstellungen präsent. Einen Einblick in sein Schaffen gibt auch eine für das Frühjahr 2025 geplante Gruppenausstellung im Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie.
